Horse memories

Happy 4th of July, America

This past week we celebrated the 4th of July.

The founding fathers of this country had an image in their minds of the possibilities for freedom. From their efforts, our country was born.
On a similar tone, we should take the time to create our own possibilities and see what our efforts could accomplish.
Many businesses, big and small, have come from such efforts.
It's up to us to explore the possibilities.

"Young Rider"
Pastel portrait

"Young Rider" was a commissioned portrait of the Beland family's granddaughter on their ole' pony "Oliver". In 1997, I had started setting up my craft table at the dressage shows the farm hosted. I would often see their granddaughter who insisted on having a pony ride whenever she was there at the farm. They would brush up "Oliver" and bring him down to the field where she would get on for a ride. Sometimes she would get hot and would want to get down. Yet a few minutes later she'd want "Up" again. She was 3 years old. I thought "Oliver" was a very cute white pony, but more so very patient and careful. Especailly when she was on his back. What a perfect perch for a young girl to have.

Sadly "Oliver" apparently was in his 30's (senior for horses) and was getting on in years and feeling it. They commisioned me to do a portrait of him so they would have something special to remember him. A number of months later, he passed away. He is surely up in Horsey Heaven. Yet each one of us has some wonderful memories of his life.
